Fighting Parkinson’s, and COVID-19

As I sit at home amid the fast-spreading COVID-19 Coronavirus outside, I am grateful to be healthy, and I am grateful for my life. Also, I am grateful for all of you. We will get through this together.

When I had Parkinson’s, during the weekdays, Sally was at work and our children were at school. I worked from home while I still could work, and I was at home by myself from 9:00am until 4:30pm each day. That was a long time to be alone with my Parkinson’s adrenaline-driven, over-thinking, self-judging, self-criticizing mind.

You know that mind. Today, here in the States, we mostly are staying home. I think that is occurring in many other countries as well. That means that many of you are spending substantially more time with your own Parkinson’s adrenaline-driven, over-thinking, self-judging, self-criticizing mind.

Since my Parkinson’s Coaching is with people around the world via phone, Skype, FaceTime, WhatsApp Video, and Zoom, I have the good fortune of seeing and talking to some of you. Also, I am learning from you how COVID-19 is being viewed from different countries and how you are dealing with the virus.

What seems to be consistent is that people are afraid. Fear is running rampant. Since most people with Parkinson’s carry around an abundance of fear (me included when I had Parkinson’s), being at home more than usual and watching the news on TV, and reading the Internet accounts of the virus spreading, generally causes more fear.

Some of this fear is our proverbial False Evidence Appearing Real FEAR. If you do not have COVID-19 and you are at home and have been at home for the last couple of weeks, then chances are you do not have it and will not get it. Let’s see if we can remove this FEAR from your worry plate.

Whether we all will run out of food or toiletries during this virus spread remains to be seen. Having fear about this solves nothing. It only creates more fear.

So, let’s get together and do something positive instead of being afraid. If you are here on this site reading this blog, then you are one of over 7,500 monthly unique visitors on this website. You are not alone even if you are sitting by yourself in your home. You are not alone.

If you are doing the Parkinson’s Recipe for Recovery®, then not only are you not alone, but have been strengthening your body to be in the best physical, mental, and spiritual condition for fighting COVID-19 as you are fighting Parkinson’s. This makes you less susceptible to getting COVID-19. How about that!

And, you are doing the Recipe every day with a minimum of 7,500 other people from over 125 countries. How about that!

Okay! Now that you are fired up, let’s be grateful for our lives and crush the fear with love…Living Openly, Vulnerably, Exceptionally. LOVE! That is what is inside us, each and every one of us – we are living, we are open about how we are, we are vulnerable in who we are, and we are exceptional – each and every one of us special simply because we exist.

Let’s close our eyes and share the love. Hold hands with the one to the left of you and the one to the right of you, and visualize our circle of courageous warriors, at least 7,500 strong, as you feel the power of the healing energy we are creating.

I feel that we best can share what we have. So, begin with yourself. I love myself. Now, turn to the right and say, “I love you.” As you can see, the one to the left of you just said to you, “I love you.”

Feel the strength of our unity of love, feel the power as you hear 7,500 voices as they turn to the right and smile and tell the one next to them, “I love you.” See it, feel it, hear it, 7,500 simultaneous “I love you” exclamations.

Now, turn to the left and say, “I love you.” As you can see, the one to the right of you just said to you, “I love you.”

Feel the strength of our unity of love, feel the power as you hear 7,500 voices as they turn to the left and smile and tell the one next to them, “I love you.” See it, feel it, hear it, 7,500 simultaneous “I love you” exclamations.

As I am certain you have noticed, there is a complete absence of fear and FEAR in our circle of love. So, why not expand our circle. There are roughly 10 million Parkinson’s sufferers worldwide.

While fear and FEAR are running rampant, why not expand our circle of love to everybody with Parkinson’s…10 million simultaneous “I love you” exclamations.

Finally, why not include all 7.7 billion people with whom we share this planet and our lives. We all are in this life together and each and every one of us needs compassion and love.

Okay! 7.7 billion hand-holding, simultaneous “I love you” exclamations.

We are each a small part of humanity. Quite frankly, we are all that we have. It is not a time for fear. It is a time that needs love.

Let’s fill the space with love. I love you all. I am grateful for each and every one of you as you courageously go down the path less traveled on the way to your Parkinson’s full recovery.

As for COVID-19, be smart, be safe, and dissolve your fear with love.

You are worth it!!!

All my best,

Howard

  19. Hi Howard,

    Thanks for your posting.

Everything happens for a purpose, though it may not be obvious and why it is so.

My gut feeling is COVID-19 has also its greater purpose. We should be thankful to it.

As I believe that I am an eternal soul, I am secure. But the scenes of hardships need to be faced as the part of a big drama, in which we are all actors with surprising parts.

However much we worry or FEAR, the sequence of acts in the world drama are not going to change, though we may seem to have a free will to affect the sequence. Some may call the sequence to be a destiny’s course of actions. Whatever it may be, when we have an understanding of our self as a spiritual being, we will have strong foundation to conquer (fears of) death.

Welcome COVID-19, for it to be a catalyst of big transformative change in this old world.

    With love and best regards,
    Venkat

Once more you touch our hearts with your insights. This brought to mind a group I facilitated years ago and named LINKS, an acronym for “living invites needed kindred spirits”. I had not thought of that in years. Your words moved me so deeply. I was flooded with memories of Links and our seeking to be spiritual warriors for peace. Now I feel linked to you Howard and the community of warriors against Parkinson’s. And now the war against the Corona virus further unites us. Thank you for touching my soul.

  25. Steve Mehl says:

Howard, so glad you discovered the healing benefits of qigong. I have been doing qigong for the past 13 years and Transcendental Meditation daily for the past 46 years. About 5 years ago I had a serious virus that had me bedridden for 5 days. The qigong master’s daughter advised me to do as much qigong as I could one day and that the virus would then be gone the next day. So I did Qigong for a total of 3.5 hours that day, went to bed and when I woke up the next day the fever was gone and I was flowing with energy. Totally different than the day before. So social isolation, herbs and qigong are my defense against the Coronavirus. I salute you Howard for your miracle self-healing because you have an open mind.

  26. Rosemary Cortez says:
