Fighting Parkinson’s, and the symptoms are not the problem

Okay everybody, here we go! For the last two weeks, you have been fighting the mind regarding the symptoms and many people’s minds have fought them back vigorously.

Thank you all for your continued persistence in fighting against your own minds. Please know this: The symptoms are not the problem.

The correct attitude in the fight against the mind is crucial

Since you now are fighting back against the mind with, “I am getting better,” “This is just side effects and withdrawal symptoms,” and “I am already better,” it is critically important that your attitude about the symptoms remains resolute.

Additionally, here is a quote from Jack Sparrow, that is, Captain Jack Sparrow from the Disney movie series Pirates of the Caribbean: “The problem is not the problem. The problem is your attitude about the problem. Do you understand?”

Moreover, I would imagine that Johnny Depp (Captain Jack Sparrow) had no idea he was talking about Parkinson’s recovery. I will paraphrase so you will understand my point better:

“The problem is not the Parkinson’s symptoms. The problem is your attitude about the Parkinson’s symptoms. Do you understand?”

The symptoms are not the problem

The symptoms are happening. Your attitude about what they mean can dramatically change your recovery. Also, when you view the symptoms with a positive attitude from your heart, you have the greatest opportunity to move forward in your Parkinson’s recovery.

Here are some examples of how a shift in attitude changes your recovery.

Event: An increase in tremors while doing the Parkinson’s Recipe for Recovery®.
Mind: Oh no, I am getting worse. Better stop the Recipe and look for something else.
Heart: Excellent, I am getting better. Also, I am generating more internal electrical impulses. These temporarily cause the body to tremor more while they are opening blockages in the body.

Event: An increase in stiffness while doing the Recipe.
Mind: Oh no, I am getting worse. Better stop the Recipe and look for something else.
Heart: Excellent, I am getting better. Additionally, I am generating more internal electrical impulses. These temporarily are shocking the muscles more as they look to open new energy passageways. This is causing me a little more stiffness in the body.

Event: An increase in slowness while doing the Recipe.
Mind: Oh no, I am getting worse. Better stop the Recipe and look for something else.
Heart: Excellent, I am getting better. Moreover, I am generating more internal electrical impulses. These temporarily are shocking the muscles more as they look to open new energy passageways. This is causing me a little more stiffness in the body. Additionally, this stiffness is making me move slower.

Attitude, attitude, attitude

The mind views an increase in a symptom as “getting worse, only getting worse.” The mind follows the current medical model for Parkinson’s, you will be “getting worse, only getting worse.”

Also, with the mind’s attitude following the “only getting worse” medical model, the Parkinson’s symptoms get worse because the mind is filled with fear, anxiety, worry, anger, frustration, and stress.

However, these are all of the emotions that helped bring the Parkinson’s symptoms to the surface in the first place. If you stay in the mind, you defeat your own recovery. This is a result of an attitude filled with a negative outlook and negative emotions and it feeds the Parkinson’s symptoms. Additionally, this ultimately makes you stop doing the Recipe and quit your recovery.

The heart views an increase in a symptom as “progress in recovery, everything is progress in recovery.” Moreover, the heart follows the Recipe’s model for Parkinson’s, if you are doing the Recipe you are making “progress in recovery, everything is progress in recovery.”

With your heart’s attitude following the “everything is progress in recovery” Recipe model, the Parkinson’s symptoms eventually get better because your heart is filled with faith, hope, love, joy, happiness, gratitude, contentment, vulnerability, and forgiveness.

Also, these are the feelings that get your dopamine flowing. The great attitude and positive feelings rid you of the Parkinson’s symptoms and the Parkinson’s disease as well. If you stay in your heart, you enhance your recovery. Moreover, an attitude filled with this outlook and these emotions keeps you doing the Recipe. Finally, this defeats the Parkinson’s and leads to your full recovery.

A powerful quote to give you an extra boost

In her comment to last week’s blog post, our fellow warrior, Yvonne, posted this quote:
“The law of invisible progress: you will see the reward for today’s efforts in a season you have not reached. Beneath the surface your actions are stacking up quietly, relentlessly, invisibly. Most people quit in this phase because they mistake lack of visible results for lack of progress. The ones who win are the ones who understand this law and keep showing up long enough for the invisible to become undeniable.” Jude Fredman.

Attitude, attitude, attitude

Lose your mind:

“No you are wrong. I am getting better.”

“No you are wrong. I am already better.”

“No you are wrong. This is side effects and withdrawal symptoms.”

“I am winning as the invisible recovery within me is becoming undeniable!”

Lose the mind…find your heart…have your full recovery.

In the comments below, let us know how you are doing with losing the mind and finding your heart.

You are worth it!

All my best,

Howard

  1. Tim in Colorado says:

I find that when I think about my symptoms they appear, or increase in severity. This is clearly the ego mind presenting itself.

So, I ignore the ego mind and my symptoms improve or disappear.

I lose the mind in Recovery.

  2. Eileen and Frank says:

Excellent post Howard, as my husband is struggling through the recipe. All of the above is so true. Thank you..and he keeps plugging away on the recipe, even if it’s difficult, he will get to recovery.

  3. Roger from UK says:

I distract my mind by thinking of something else or tapping my forehead so the task becomes easier to do.
I am so grateful for these weekly blogs and the comments from fellow warriors.
    We are all truly blessed.

  4. DeAnna says:

One of my teachers used to say:
    “Think As If…
    Feel As If…
    Act As If…
    Become…!”

Today, inspired by your excellent post, Howard,
I endeavor to Think as if I’m already recovered…
Feel as if I’m already recovered…
Act as if I’m already recovered…
Recover! (in Great Spirit’s time :)

Today I started “Thinking As If” by telling myself:
“When I had PD I used to have so many rigid rules that I forced myself to live by…
Now, that I’m recovered I flow freely from my Heart…”

And as I say this, I notice more rigid rules I have and do my best to relax them…

Thanks, Howard, and thank you PD warrior community,
together we are changing the (our) world!

  5. Bruce M says:

Thanks for reminding us of the inevitable.
In practising a qigong movement or form, I find that, even if it’s hard to do, you can switch off the mind for a bit—it’s liberating.

    I am already better

  6. Sandy says:

Thank you Howard for another inspirational post. I am allowing my heart and soul to rule and the feeling of peace and calmness is overwhelming. I will have my full recovery!

  7. Lesa says:

It is so true that we become what we believe. Each day I keep showing up for myself, and each day I know what I am doing is so important. It’s the everyday little steps that lead me. I am filled with love and lead with curiosity instead of running! That feels so good!
Thank you Yvonne for the beautiful quote.
    Thank you Howard.

    And so it is.

  8. Kevin C says:

When my symptoms are “worse” I give gratitude for having my soul, for my ability to do the exercise, for my recovery, and many other things. I do this because it helps, and it is reminds me of truths. This is because it is impossible to give gratitude and worry at the same time. Gratitude puts my mind in the right place (attitude for my mind that matches my heart).

  9. Joanne M says:

Thank you for this powerful post. When I quiet my mind and open my heart, I feel at peace and symptoms subside. When I tell my mind “No, you are wrong, I am better”, I move closer to my full recovery and realize I am better each day.

  11. Sandra says:

The symptoms are not the problem, it is attitude, attitude, attitude!

Losing my mind….finding my heart….having my full recovery.
It is something I practice every waking hour of every day! When I
get frustrated by the slowness and fatigue I tell myself I am doing the recipe.
I am getting better and making progress in recovery.

There is no other choice, I am worth it!
    We are worth it!

Thank you so very much Howard!!!!!!

  12. Yvonne says:

Here’s another post I need to read every day. It’s a process for me. I work on losing my mind and finding my heart every day, all day every day. I know I’m already better and even though the how and the when are not in my control, I know my recovery is coming.

I love the faith verse Yvonne! I certainly have needed Howard’s reminder about the heart and mind. I’ve been waging a war against the mind that instigates fear concerning symptoms. May God help us all to carry on knowing we are healing!

  13. Ninni says:

    Hello fellow warriors,
I am here because of my husband who is showing great strength and recovery. He was very much bent on his left side which is straightened up to a great extent, his speech is recovering and I, his wife, can hear him better. It has been 5 months now under the coaching of most beloved and inspiring Howard. Had it been not for him, we would not imagine my husband’s recovery. We have complete faith in him, he is that bright light in our lives, we are so deeply grateful to him for showing us the way.
Every time I read your posts, Howard, I am overwhelmed with so much motivation and inspiration, I read out loud your blog to my husband and all the comments. I also had a vision of my husband’s recovery is very near. I am manifesting all the time what all we will do after his full recovery: Travel, dance, go to India, come to USA to meet Howard and Sally, etc etc…. I know from my heart that my husband’s recovery is not far. Love to all. ❤️ 💝 💕

I have fallen maybe 5 times over the past few years. And each time it happens I get this feeling of inner peace, as if I am being taken care of. Held in loving arms. I still get cuts and bruises—but I am held in spirit. My invisible recovery.

  16. Bruce L says:

No, you are wrong, we are getting better.
Had a great day last week where I woke up with no symptoms and that lasted most of the day. Had a session with my trainer that day and he noticed something different in me, more energy.
I’m allowed to have my full recovery from Parkinson’s.
I’m worthy of my full recovery from Parkinson’s.
Thank you for my full recovery from Parkinson’s.

Here” is a quote from Joseph Joubert:

„L’esprit nous fait connaître ce qu’il faut éviter, et le cœur ce qu’il faut faire.“

„The mind can tell us what we must refrain from doing. But the heart can tell us what we must do.“

My heart is filled with faith, hope, love, joy, happiness, gratitude, contentment, vulnerability, and forgiveness.
My heart says: I’m feeling much better.

Thank you dear Howard for this insight.

  20. Rosalie says:

My symptoms are distractions attempting to sabotage my recovery. The symptoms are not the problem. My positive attitude makes all the difference! Losing my mind, finding my heart, bringing my full recovery!

Thank you, Howard, and all the warriors who are with us on this journey.

  21. Irene H says:

Thank you all for the inspiration. I’m just getting through the book and started the morning recipe, diagnosed a few months ago. My DAT scan did show low dopamine. I have hope now that I can heal my body with God‘s help every day. I’m working on turning it over, meditating, trying to be in love, light and peace. I’m so grateful for this community and looking forward to hearing more stories and sharing with you all when I heal completely, I am convinced this is a mind body thing and yes, we can heal with God’s help. We just have to change and reprogram our brain and hearts.
